Other Artists and Designs
Although excellent art and design are vital to ensure the success of written health care communications, how this is accomplished in a printed piece varies with the goal of the project and the artistic preferences of the client.
Seymour Chwast, the noted illustrator and co-founder of the famous Push Pin Studios in New York City, created the illustrations and designs for many of the educational programs currently offered on learningaboutdiabetes.org.
Seymour's illustration style and design talents offer a number of advantages for those who are creating easy-to-read or low literacy health education programs. His loose, whimsical illustrations have great stopping power (the reader wants to pick up the material to find out more about it). The illustrations and layouts also entertain readers at times, drawing readers in and encouraging them to turn the page and continue the learning process – a goal that is often hard to achieve with low literacy readers.
The intelligence evident in Seymour’s illustrations also appeals to educated readers, who readily appreciate the creativity in the work. An artist whose work appeals to both literate and low literacy readers offers a real benefit to organizations who cannot afford to produce materials for both groups.
This said, not all artistic styles appeal to all educators or all patients. Below are examples of the styles of other artists we work with that can be used in any program we create for non-profit organizations.
